Meet Juan - Risk Analytics Engineer
What’s your Tipico story?
My Tipico story started when I came across an opportunity that aligned perfectly with my passion for data and Bookmaking. This filled the missing analytical part I always wanted in my previous operational Sportsbook role and Tipico is now enabling me to apply my technical skills in a meaningful way.
What was your first impression of Tipico?
Professionalism. From the initial online interview to the in-person meeting, the process was very smooth and the rigorous steps one has to go through make it seem very special once you make it. When I visited the office, it immediately oozed a casual Sportsbook atmosphere, making me feel at ease. All in all, it was a warm welcome and my then new colleagues indirectly made sure to maximise my first impression of Tipico.
What have been your best moments working here?
The initial phase of my employment is very memorable given the steep learning curve I went through, especially when considering that I was experimenting with a company’s data for the first time. Also, collaborating with my team and getting to grips with new tools is definitely up there from a technical perspective.
On the social side of things, team events are some of the best memories I have and this is where we get to know each other most. Lastly, the recent Hackathon was an incredible experience where employees from different areas of expertise meshed together to build a proof of concept and it’s safe to say that this won’t be my last one.
What challenges do you face?
From a pure Bookmaking POV, adapting to wise customer patterns is the most challenging part of our job I believe. Additionally, the evolving tech stack requires me to always be in the loop of emerging tools which I need to learn alongside daily routines. Consequently, as developments grow, it’s no longer writing scripts conveniently, but coding in a way where scripts are run efficiently with minimal throughput.
What is special about Tipico?
Seamless collaboration between team members of different backgrounds is the first thing that comes to mind, where trust, accountability and independence are proven on a daily basis. The freedom to build processes within Tipico’s tech stack is definitely a big plus, especially when combined with the fact that personal development is highly prioritised.
What does your daily pitch look like?
The first step is logging in with a cup of tea or a latte and this is highly dependent on the weather. Next, I scan through emails and Slack messages whilst also verifying the smoothness of our data processes and if a mishap is present, I’d jump on it unless my team members have already done so.
Planning the day around meetings is what follows and during this unoccupied time, I’m writing scripts for the most part. Day-to-day tasks differ and a balance has to be kept between daily monitoring, efficiency optimisation and the fresh construction of data flows which require more time and dedication. A day could be made up of numerous small tasks or sole focus on a big project which requires back-and-forth building and debugging of code.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to develop ClickHouse and Airflow pipelines where real-time data can be leveraged in a way where it wasn’t before. This will enable us to deploy real-time alerting flows which will speed up protocols. This aligns with the dynamic pace at Tipico which demands further scalability of tools to allow for more sophisticated data pipelines.
Also, getting to meet new hires is also part of this list since we get to share our knowledge in the technical realm, resulting in us bouncing ideas off each other. Every person has his own bag of tricks and combining the team’s technicalities enables the group to grow both as a team and as a person.
As you know we love sports.. which is your favourite?
MMA. Most people that know me are aware of this due to my exhaustive passion for this sport, primarily the main promotion, the UFC. My life revolves around close people and the UFC outside of work hours and the word “fanatic” would be an understatement. This has cost me several sleepless nights due to the sport’s US roots but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What is your one piece of advice for anyone interested in being part of our game?
Tipico is a place for driven, energetic individuals who love to take initiative. One has to be eager to learn to keep up with the dynamic environment that’s present. If passion is something that fuels your daily routine, then Tipico is the right place for you as you’ll have the freedom to fulfill ideas and collaborate with like-minded team members.
